USAToday says no need to fear a Mormon
USA Today has a good article on Mitt Romney and the Church, saying there’s no need to fear a Mormon presidential candidate. The article suggests that Romney quickly make a public statement, in a large venue, to quell any fears that he would answer to Salt Lake City or that his Mormonism would affect his Presidency.
Harry Reid’s ignoring the Mormon church’s pleas for a federal marriage amendment can serve to calm any public sentiment that Mormons walk in lock step with their church.
The article also refutes some of the concerns in recent articles of Slate and The New Republic.
[W]e endorse the spirit of Article VI in the Constitution, which states that there should be no religious test for public office.
Kennedy captured that spirit well in 1960 when he said: “While this year it may be a Catholic against whom the finger of suspicion is pointed, in other years it has been — and may someday be again — a Jew, or a Quaker, or a Unitarian, or a Baptist.”
Or even a Mormon.
