Southern Baptist Convention warns Christians about teachings of Mormonism
The Southern Baptist Convention is at it again.
“Rob Bowman with the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) says Christians need to be aware that the beliefs of the Mormon Church are inconsistent with biblical Christianity. As one Mormon candidate launches his White House bid, the Southern Baptist official is urging Christians to take advantage of materials his denomination offers that teach the truth about Mormonism.”
The SBC should know this: “Mormonism” is the religion most consistent with biblical Christianity. We do not apologize for our beliefs. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the only true Christian church on the face of the earth.
Going to the SBC for “materials” on the LDS Church is like going to Marx to learn about capitalism. To learn about the LDS Church click here.
Does the SBC have tax exempt status?
Left by David on 02/16/2007Why make things worse by making provocative statements such as “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the only true Christian church on the face of the earth?” Sure this is technically accurate from the perspective of LDS theology, but when evangelicals hear the phrase “only true Christian church” coming from Mormons they tend to interpret this as meaning “Mormons think that my church is all wrong.” And that is not an accurate representation of the LDS position. They also tend to mis-interpret that sort of a statement as meaning “Mormons don’t think I’m really Christian, they think they are the only true Christians on the earth.” Which, again, is not what Latter-day Saints actually believe.

I’m not going to spin what we believe. I’m not going to sugar coat it. Having served a mission in the south and having dealt with the SBC I can tell you that the best way to counter their attacks is honest testimony.
Left by Chris on 02/19/2007I don’t want you to spin what we believe. I do wish to suggest, however, that you can be both direct, honest, and tactful about the restored Gospel all at the same time. If you attack the SBC the same way they attack us, you lose the moral high ground. If you are polite and acknowledge common ground while simultaneously explaining Latter-day Saint doctrine in a clear, non-confrontational way, you are more likely to encourage honest truth seekers to investigate your position more closely.

Left by Michael Hickman on 08/23/2007This makes no sense to me. The Doctrine and Covenants are published to the World, “For verily the voice of the Lord is unto all men,… Behold, this is mine authority, and the authority of my servants, and my preface unto the book of my commandments, which I have given them to publish unto you, O inhabitants of the earth…the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased.” Wherefore, the things which are pleasing unto the world I do not write, but the things which are pleasing unto God and unto those who are not of the world.” behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end.
I live in the South, and I am the only member in my family, my stepdad being a member of the SBC, this is something that became concern quickly when I joined the church. We found common ground in the thirteenth article of faith, and from there I explained to him that all churches have some truth and that it’s only been distorted. Anyone heard of doing the cup lesson with the missionaries? I think that’s a good representation of why we say it, and perhaps it would be a novel idea to clarify that we are the only true church with the fullness of the Gospel. It’s rather involved isn’t it? I agree with Chris as well, bearing a strong and honest testimony will do the trick, it’s worked in more than enough situations up to now, but if the same person that is bashing the claim of the only true church understood our doctrines, they too will know it’s the only true church isn’t it?
